Ergonomic office furniture is a much larger assortment these days than it was just a few years ago. At one time the phrase only referred to odd looking chairs that were said to be comfortable but were completely impractical. Those chairs evolved to become the standard for office chairs we use today wherein ergonomic elements are skillfully designed into a conventional or better said traditional chair platform. But as we said ergonomic office furniture is much more these days. For example, office desks now feature wave fronts and insets that allow the user to maintain the correct distance from their computer monitor and keyboard. Being able to properly reach a keyboard and maintain correct line of sight to a computer monitor are essentials of ergonomic design.
Even simple items such as filing cabinets have ergonomics built into them. We no longer insist upon huge tall metal filing cabinets from which an endless length drawer must be pulled. We have replaced this item with horizontal filing cabinets that are easily accessed from the seated position. Chairs, desks, and office storage are all designed and constructed so as to work well with the human form.

Integration of ergonomics has become a base standard in office furniture
Friday, September 23rd, 2011Glass can be very practical as an office desk surface
Friday, September 23rd, 2011For many years now homeowners have found that glass office desks are perfect for use in the small home office. The simple lines and obviously basic design of glass office desks allow this unique type of furniture to blend easily with any environment. Other important features of these desks are the generally more narrow depth and overall smaller desktop sizes. The latter is compensated for by building the majority of these desks as corner units or by building on to the desk a shelf superstructure. Other features include the all important sliding keyboard shelf and built in lower shelf for a computer central processing unit.
When choosing one of these units for either the home or working office, one is not limited to simple clear glass. Also available are black glass, smoked glass and frosted glass variations. Structural components for glass desks are generally made of steel and are very often powder coated. This process creates an almost indestructible finish on the legs and other support bracing. Powder coating is available in any color but is generally used in simulation of a metal or hammered finish. In choosing this type of desk very often matching glass storage pedestals are made available as well as beautiful matching bookshelves.
Outdated office chairs can be a source of workday fatigue
Friday, September 23rd, 2011If you spend a great deal of time every day at your desk and lately have been discovering new levels of lower back pain and discomfort, the first and probably last place you need to look for answers is at your office chair. Chair designs from the past are generally extremely inefficient and uncomfortable. Aside from the fact that chairs were designed a 100 years ago for much shorter and less stout bodies, there remains the issue that important features relative to ergonomic support were not as yet examined and created. So if one is seated on an office chair and the armrests are too low very often the user pushes off of these rests in such a way as to injure their shoulders. Likewise when a chair back does not have sufficient lumbar support the elbows and arms of the user are injured attempting to compensate.
The modern office chair is designed to accommodate our new information technology workplace wherein the user must very often sit for 5 to 8 hours at a stretch in one position. A simple test of your office chair and it’s relative ergonomic efficiency is to lean back in your chair and if you feel you’re back being lifted while you lean back you can take from this the knowledge that your chair in its normal usage does not offer sufficient lower back support.
The modern interpretation of classic pub tables
Friday, September 23rd, 2011I’m sure everyone has sat in their pub and looked at the hammered copper cable top over a stout wood frame that is fastened to a cast iron base and saw that item as being surely indestructible. For the most part this is true as these pub tables have served their customers well for very often over 100 years. Barring the occasional cracked marble top on some of these they no doubt will continue to do so. But antique pub tables and bentwood chairs may not be the preferred choice for cafes specializing in pizza. Avante garde restaurant’s need avant garde bistro furniture. This furniture often dictates the charm and character of the restaurant or cafe.
Still many of the ingredients of our 100 year old cast iron and copper pub table find themselves in modern bistro furniture. Today we opt for durable yet lightweight aluminum for the tabletop. Our base will be constructed of stainless steel weighted all around the round bottom edge. Interestingly the original bent wood design of the bistro chair as created by Michael Thonet in the late 1800s has changed little in design except that its construction is now made from tubular aluminum or plastic.
Matching the size of a new desk to your home office space
Friday, September 23rd, 2011When choosing your perfect home office desk, the two primary considerations are size of the desk meaning its footprint in your available space and the style of the desk. The latter is crucially important as your home office desk must either blend into your current style and decor or stand alone as a unique piece. Any decorating statement that falls in between is likely to make your home living area look as if you live in an office and not vice versa. For this reason a glass home office desk is a wonderful choice. True, most of these desks are styled in a high tech or ultramodern design sense. But with the largest amount of surface area that being the desktops, extensions and superstructure being made of glass, the clear glass renders a neutral design statement. This basically allows your home office desk to blend into the design elements of any room.
Another advantage to using a desk made in this material is that nothing is easier to clean than glass. A little Windex and a wipe with a paper towel will remedy almost any situation. Lest one think that glass furniture is not sturdy enough, be aware that all of the desktops and structural elements in office furniture made from glass are built using only tempered safety glass.
